What is The College Academy?
College Academy is a full-time dual enrollment program for
accelerated high school students located on the central campus
of Broward College. All college and high school courses are
taught on the college campus.
WHAT DOES THE COLLEGE ACADEMY OFFER?
The program offers qualified students the opportunity to
receive a high school diploma from The School Board of
Broward County and an Associate of Arts (AA) degree from
Broward College concurrently. It also provides the opportunity
for students to qualify for the Florida Bright Futures
Scholarship Program as a Florida Academic Scholar or a
Florida Medallion Scholar.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ATTEND THE COLLEGE
ACADEMY?
As a College Academy student, all tuition and books are
provided for all coursework at no cost to the participants.
Students earn credits by taking two college classes in the
morning and three classes with The College Academy in the
afternoon. Most of The College Academy classes are dual
enrollment meaning they earn both high school and college
credits. In other words, the freshman and sophomore years of
college are free of charge.
WHO MAY ATTEND?
The College Academy is available to qualified rising juniors
who are Broward County residents. Upcoming Juniors who have earned
at least 12 high school credits are eligible for admission into
The College Academy based on the following criteria which includes all approved dual enrollment requirements:

The College Academy is designed for students who have the
maturity required for college campus life, the discipline to use
their time wisely, and the academic ability to handle the rigor
of college work.

WHEN IS THE APPLICATION DEADLINE?
Deadline to apply for admission to The College Academy is
February 23 2011
WHEN IS THE CPT DEADLINE?
Deadline to submit CPT scores is April 1. After The College
Academy receives an application, the applicant will receive a
“CPT testing letter” as per timeline. It is the responsibility
of the student to submit the test results to The College
Academy Office on or before deadline.
WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I AM ACCEPTED?
Students will be mailed notification of acceptance by May 6
DO STUDENTS FOLLOW THE BROWARD PUBLIC
SCHOOLS CALENDAR OR THE BC CALENDAR?
College Academy students and faculty follow the BC
calendar. Both BC and College Academy classes will begin
in August.
ARE STUDENTS STILL ABLE TO QUALIFY FOR FREE
AND REDUCED LUNCH?
Yes. F/R/L will be provided to qualified students.
HOW ARE STUDENTS TRANSPORTED TO THE COLLEGE
ACADEMY?
With parental permission, students are allowed to provide
their own transportation. Students that drive to school will
need to secure a parking decal, at no cost, from the BC
Campus Security Office. For students requiring bus
transportation, school buses are available as per the Broward
County calendar. Students not providing their own
transportation should be aware that BC classes starting at
8:00 or 9:00 a.m. are not an option.
WHAT DOES A STUDENT'S DAY LOOK LIKE ?
During Term I and Term II students attend traditional BC classes in the morning and
College Academy dual enrollment classes in the afternoon.
Class times vary during Summer A term.
The student curriculum balances dual enrollment courses and
a few high school courses to fit individual needs. Students
choosing to further accelerate through additional dual
enrollment coursework may do so through BC’s
summer B term.
The College Academy classes begin at 1:00 p.m. and
conclude at 4:00 p.m. Students’ BC morning schedules vary.
BC classes typically begin at 8:00 a.m. and meet on
alternating days; Monday/Wednesday, Tuesday/Thursday, or
Fridays. Students who do not provide their own
transportation should be aware the BC classes starting at
8:00 or 9:00 a.m. are not an option. School buses arrive in
time for 9:30 a.m. classes.
MUST COLLEGE ACADEMY STUDENTS STAY ON
CAMPUS BETWEEN 9:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.?
No. BC is a public space and an open access campus (open
to the general public). Like all BC students, College
Academy students are permitted to leave campus as their
schedule allows.
WHAT COURSES WILL BE OFFERED?
The College Academy component will consist of required
English, Social Studies, and Mathematics courses. For all
other required and elective courses, students will be able to
select from the wide range of dual enrollment approved
general education courses offered by Broward College.
HOW DO STUDENTS KNOW WHAT COURSES TO TAKE?
The College Academy employs a full-time guidance
counselor to provide academic, personal, social, and career and BRACE advisor
advisement. In addition, a Broward College counselor assists students in the development of an
educational plan. Also, high school teachers act as
mentors/advisors.
ARE STUDENTS ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN
TRADITIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES SUCH AS
ATHLETICS, BAND, DRAMA, AND
NEWSPAPER/YEARBOOK?
No. The College Academy does not offer these types of
activities. Students may participate in BC’s extensive
extracurricular activities and programs. This college
experience will provide the opportunity for students to
integrate into campus life. Activities may include, but are not
limited to: intramural and other campus recreational
programs; academic and professional organizations such as
Mathematics Team, Student Government, Potters Guild, BC
Broadcasters, Engineering Association, and Brain Bowl;
special interest clubs and activities including, but not limited
to: Drama, College Singers, Concert Choir, Jazz Ensemble,
Symphonic Band and The Observer, BC’s award winning
newspaper.
WILL STUDENTS BE ABLE TO TRANSFER TO A
UNIVERSITY?
Yes. College credit earned at Broward College is
transferable.
DO STUDENTS HAVE TO MAINTAIN A SPECIFIC GRADE
POINT AVERAGE TO REMAIN AT THE COLLEGE
ACADEMY?
Yes. Students must maintain a 2.5 college GPA to remain in
the program.
WILL STUDENTS BE ABLE TO TRANSFER BACK TO
THEIR HOME HIGH SCHOOLS?
Yes. Students are entitled to transfer to their home
(boundaried) schools.

BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA, CODE OF STUDENT
CONDUCT OR RULES AND REGULATIONS SET FORTH
BY BROWARD COLLEGE?
Students enrolled in The College Academy must adhere to
the rules and regulations of both institutions.
DOES THE JESSICA LUNSFORD ACT APPLY AT
BROWARD COLLEGE?
No. Broward College, and therefore College Academy, is a
public space and an open access campus (open to the general
public). The Jessica Lunsford* rules that exist for traditional
public schools cannot apply for College Academy.
* Jessica Lunsford Act obliges all personnel who are in contact with students to
undergo a state and national fingerprint-based criminal history check.
