Course Description:
U.S. history from the post-Civil War Reconstruction period to the present. A general survey of the basic forces shaping American life: development of modern industrialism; organization of laborers and farmers, immigration; the Progressive Era; World War I; the 1920s; the Great Depression and the New Deal; origins and impact of World War II; advent of the Cold War; post-war tensions; the complacent 1950s; social/political unrest in the 1960s; disillusionment and search for new directions since 1970. This course will also address modern history, including the Elections of 2000, 2004, and 2008.
Assigned Readings and Class Preparation:
Chapter readings should be completed prior to scheduled class lectures. Failure to come unprepared to class will prevent you from participating in classroom discussions and/or activities. It is mandatory to bring your textbook to class everyday. Unannounced quizzes may be given at any time on scheduled reading assignments and cannot be made up.
Class Attendance:
Attendance is of vital importance in order to successfully complete this course. An attendance/participation grade will be given at the end of the term.
Tests and make-up work must be completed two calendar days after an absence.
Tests and other assignments:
• Tests will be given after completion of selected chapters. Make-up tests are more difficult in scope so please be present on regularly scheduled test days. Refer to your class calendar for detailed information.
• Videos shown in class are for instructional purposes only. Notes will be taken on each video and collected at the end of class.
• Current Events assignments will count as ONE (1) TEST grade at the end of the term. Every assignment must have the article stapled to it. Late papers WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Your total grade will be assessed in the following manner:
Tests 45%
Homework/Classwork 15%
Quizzes/Participation 15%
Final Exam 25%

Students are encouraged to review thoroughly both BCC and College Academy’s Code of Conduct. Students who deliberately ignore or refuse to comply with school rules will be referred to Administration.
